Trompe-l'œil Print Series, Collection piece

The Spring-Summer 1999 collection revisited and reinterpreted many of the defining ideas and motifs that had shaped Maison Martin Margiela during its first decade. Rather than reproducing earlier works, the collection developed and reimagined their underlying concepts, offering a renewed perspective on the House's creative legacy. Presented nearly ten years after the founding of the Maison, it marked both a reflection on Margiela's pioneering vision and a reaffirmation of its continued evolution.

This collection piece reinterprets the celebrated Trompe-l'œil series first introduced in the Spring-Summer 1996 collection. A photographic image of a classic Chesterfield coat is printed onto a long cardigan, creating the illusion that the wearer is dressed in an entirely different garment. Borrowing its name from the French term meaning "to deceive the eye," the series translated the artistic tradition of trompe-l'œil into fashion, blurring the boundaries between reality and illusion. By challenging the relationship between image and object, representation and materiality, the work stands as one of Martin Margiela's most celebrated conceptual designs.
