- DESCRIPTION
-
Since the early 1990s, Yasuko Toyoshima has consistently presented conceptual works that reexamine the systems, conventions, and values that are often taken for granted in society.
Her practice exposes the complex interplay between the individual and the social, revealing how the two are not simply in opposition but intricately intertwined.
This work is part of an early and emblematic series in which Toyoshima meticulously fills in, with graphite, the spaces outside the designated answer boxes on examination sheets.
By inverting the very act of “answering” and shifting attention to what is normally left blank, the artist questions the legitimacy of existing systems of evaluation—a critique rooted in her own experiences as a former student subject to those standards.
Through a seemingly simple gesture, Toyoshima probes the relationship between rules and deviation, self and society.
The series was also exhibited in her solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, which holds other works from the same body of work in its collection.
