The 1950s marked a dynamic period in which Japan’s postwar avant-garde art groups began to flourish.

YAMAGUCHI Katsuhiro (1928–2018) is widely known as a founding member of Jikken Kobo (Experimental Workshop), an interdisciplinary art collective established in the early 1950s. In 1981, Yamaguchi proposed the concept of the “Imaginarium” - an information-based environment - and over the course of his six-decade career, he produced a wide range of media art spanning painting, sculpture, video works, and video installations.

One of the key works that brought Yamaguchi into the spotlight was Vitrine, created in 1952. This box-shaped piece consists of three layers: patterned glass (mol glass), an image drawn on glass, and another image on paper. The use of polarized glass allows the imagery to shift depending on the viewer’s angle, creating a dynamic visual experience through the refraction of light. The title Vitrine, meaning “showcase” in French, was given by poet and critic Takiguchi Shuzo, who described it as a “music box for the eyes.”

In this work, Light Sculpture ‘Vitrine’, created in the 1990s, Yamaguchi added a new element - light - by incorporating fluorescent lamps inside the work. In his later years, Yamaguchi delved further into interactive art, encouraging a reciprocal relationship between artwork and audience. The Vitrine series remained a central and symbolic body of work for the artist, and this particular piece stands out as a rare and significant contribution to his oeuvre.
