DESCRIPTION

KUWAHARA Moriyuki (1942-) is one of Japan's leading contemporary artists, active since the late 1960s. In 1968, he received the 12th Shell Art Award (now known as the Idemitsu Art Award) and went on to garner both national and international acclaim - exhibiting at venues such as Fourth Triennale-India in 1978, and holding solo exhibitions at institutions including the Color Museum and the Ikeda Museum of 20th Century Art. His meticulously executed drawings are housed in major art museums across Japan, including the Ohara Museum of Art, the Setagaya Art Museum, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka.

Kuwahara’s practice unfolds according to a precise and self-imposed methodology: beginning with grid points, he selects and isolates specific dots, which he then connects with circles of equal radius. This entire process is carried out manually, without the mediation of digital tools, relying solely on the artist’s hand and sustained experimentation. His method originated in 1963, while he was a student at Nihon University College of Art, with an attempt to mark aluminium plates with punctiform scratches - an early gesture that led to his recognition of an invisible force inherent in “clusters.” Kuwahara's work often uses color, but there are no clear rules. The drawings that emerge from the act of drawing circles in accordance with a regular rhythm and the response of a free sensibility are based on a common system, yet each one forms a diverse and unique iconography.

This work, Interrelationship in Concurrence Organization (1), is a 112 cm square drawing rendered in ink on paper, following the system described above. It was part of the series that debuted in Kuwahara’s first solo exhibition at Minami Gallery in 1974 and stands today as one of the defining works of his early career.
