Marcella BARCELÓ (1992-) is a contemporary artist based in Paris. Working across painting, drawing, ink, and washi paper, she creates subconscious landscapes where a girlish gaze intersects with fragile and ephemeral memories of nature. Her works are devoid of clear narrative, yet gently touch the deeper layers of the viewer’s memory and emotion through landscapes that might have once belonged to someone else’s recollections. In Una storia tra gelosia e passione (2024), painted with ink on washi, the aesthetics of mono no aware and Shinto sensibilities quietly resonate. In 2015, she received the Contemporary Drawing Prize from the Beaux-Arts de Paris. Since then, her works have entered the collections of institutions such as the Fondation Louis Vuitton and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Ibiza.
Painted with acrylic and nail polish, this large-scale work (130 × 140 cm) visualizes the liminal space between nature and the unconscious, using the carnivorous Venus flytrap as a symbolic expression of repressed desire and latent anxiety. Raised in Mallorca, Barceló maintains a profound connection to nature—mountains, the sea—which informs the ritualistic, weightless scenes in her work where nature, humanity, and memory intersect. Figures standing alone and recurring botanical motifs gently guide the viewer into a forest of memory, while the vivid colours and floating composition of this painting open a portal to an uncanny, otherworldly forest.
