The contemporary artist UMEZAWA Kazuki (1985-) is widely known for his style of using unique Japanese cultural subjects such as anime and otaku. After graduating from Musashino Art University with a degree in film and video, he began showing his work in both online and art scenes around 2008. Since then, he has exhibited his work in museums and galleries in Japan and abroad, and continues to be one of the most active contemporary Japanese artists.
His approach to production is to break down images and videos he finds on the internet into fragments of data and collage those pieacecs of information on a flat surface to create a kind of chaotic assemblage of images. His technique is deeply influenced by his personal experiences on platforms such as pixiv and Nico Nico Douga. He has spoken about how the sense of unity created by the intense interplay of video and danmaku (bullet comments) on these platforms served as a key inspiration for his current artistic practice.
This work, A Certain Mankind's Super Landscape, created in 2012, is a large-scale work consisting of three 80 x 130 cm panels that form a single image. This work was presented at the artist's solo exhibition ‘Extreme AR Image Core’ at Diesel Art Gallery in 2013. For this exhibition, Umezawa collaborated with the creative unit AR 3 Brothers to integrate augmented reality (AR) technology. By viewing the work through a monitor with AR features, viewers experienced an intersection of the virtual and the real, further enhancing the immersive quality of his vision.
