DESCRIPTION

Eikoh Hosoe (1933–2024), whose passing last year at the age of 91 is widely mourned, was one of the most influential photographers in post-war Japan. Hosoe graduated from the Tokyo College of Photography (now Tokyo Polytechnic University) in 1954. Currently, a tribute exhibition is being held until June 7 at the Shadai Gallery, which he contributed hugely for its establishment and worked for many years. During his study, Hosoe joined the Demokrato Artists Association, an avant-garde group led by artists such as Ei-Q. After graduating, he worked as a freelance photographer and founded the photo agency ‘VIVO’ together with other fellow photographers. He played a leading role in shaping the postwar Japanese photography scene, developing it in his own unique direction by linking it with avant-garde movements that sought new intersections with art, literature, performance and film. His major works include ‘Man and Woman’ and ‘Ordeal by Roses,’ a celebrated collaboration with writer Yukio Mishima.

Hosoe first encountered Antoni Gaudí’s architecture during a visit to Barcelona, Spain, in 1964. From 1977 onward, he made repeated visits to iconic Gaudí sites such as the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and Casa Batlló, resulting in the photographic series Gaudí’s Universe. This work, Casa Mila 7, was taken in 1977 as part of that series.
Casa Milà was constructed by Gaudí between 1906 and 1910 as a residence for industrialist Pere Milà and his wife, Roser Segimon. The building is renowned for its complete absence of straight lines; its undulating curves evoke natural forms such as sand dunes or lava waves. This photograph was presented as a tribute to Gaudí, capturing the vitality and grandeur that Hosoe found so moving in the architect’s creations.
