A large-scale solo exhibition held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo from December 2023 to March 2024, Toyoshima Yasuko (1967-) stands as one of Japan's leading contemporary artists. Driven by conceptual art narrative, her notable creations include Answer Sheet, Pencil, Open Bank Account, and more recently, Cover-up Maneuvering and Panel. Despite the diversity in her artistic style, Toyoshima's practice consistently embodies a confrontational stance towards institutional frameworks, values, and promises, questioning the nature of others and the self from the notion of “self.”

In her works, Toyoshima frequently incorporates tools, systems, and objects from her surroundings.This work, "Color Compensation 3," is one of the "Color Compensation " series, which was also shown in the solo exhibition "Genesis - Front and Back of Heaven, Earth, Left and Right." In "Color Compensation 1," I attempt to repaint the commonly shared color system based on the setting of "I." In all of these works, I insert a different perspective using "I" while maintaining the context of so-called existing mechanisms, frameworks, and permutations, and by deviating from the original meaning, distorting, inverting, and spinning around, I can say that I am trying to capture the "generation" of the structure and our perception and experience.

This work was created in 2008, and is colored with oil-based marker ink on a transparent art case. The transparent case is used as a support for the "painting," and the objects inside the transparent case are color-separated by the light that passes through the color of the "painting." The color shadows projected on the wall under the influence of that light are also beautiful.
