DESCRIPTION

Kazumi Nakamura is a Japanese painter active since the 1980s. He is widely known for his colourful paintings with an exquisite balance between figuration and abstraction, based on his research into American Abstract Expressionism and his attention to methods of expressing space and figurative characters that play symbolic and symbolic roles in traditional East Asian painting. He also advocates the epistemology that the meaning of a painting can only exist in the difference between one painting and another, as is the case with the meaning of language, and develops his work based on the concept of ‘differential painting’. Representative series include the ‘Y-shape’, ‘Diagonal Grid’ and ‘Phoenix’ series, and his works have been exhibited at museums in Japan and abroad, including the Sezon Museum of Contemporary Art and the Iwaki City Museum of Art, and his works are in the collections of major museums in Japan.

The Bird in its Existence is a series of works Nakamura has been working on since the mid-2000s.
He began working on this project when he was searching for the meaning of painting in a world where tragic events such as wars and disasters occur frequently. As Nakamura says, ‘Existence must fly, and only that which can fly is existence’, she continues to depict the flight of all kinds of existence through her paintings. This series is the largest series of more than 300 works in the series produced by Nakamura, in which various patterns are developed based on the archetypal image of the bird, a being with which Nakamura has had a relationship since ancient times. The present work, Bird in its Existence 293, is a typical embodiment of the series produced between 2012-14, depicting a being in flight, characterised by its bright yellow colour.
