DESCRIPTION

Publisher: Peder Bonnier, New York

Donald Judd (1928 - 1994) transformed American postwar art by focusing on materiality and minimalism. Judd advocated for an artistic rejection of historic European conventions. In an essay called “Specified Objects” (1965), Judd denounced the pursuit of illusionary art, the creation of represented space as opposed to real space. Following this, Judd produced works that occupied space and forced viewers to consider their own physicality within space. Judd’s work challenged the simple classification between painting and sculpture, concept and artefact, and furniture and art. These late works focus on the theory of serialism within minimalism. Works are produced in a systematic manner where each object possesses meaning in relation to the other objects within the sequence.
The primary colors of "Untitled" are only comprehensible once the sequence is completed, without one of the colors, a layer of context is removed. As each element is central to the work, there is a provocative statement of equality and a representation of non-hierarchical structuring. The sameness of the objects’ appearance emphasizes the variation between each object and heightens the individuality of each piece.
