DESCRIPTION

The radical impact of minimalism on the 20th century art scene is visible in Donald Judd’s (1928 - 1994) iconic "Corner Chair 15". Judd eschewed the abstract expressionism of the 1950s American art world to focus on materiality, clarity, and autonomy. In 1965, Judd published an essay entitled “Specified Objects” that became a manifesto for Judd’s 3-D works. These works were conceptualized to transcend categorization. Each piece was created to inhabit space and question the roles of sculpture, painting, and furniture in totality. These genre-bending pieces represented a defiant move away from art that was easy to categorize within movements, with each piece standing as a testament to its own creation and defining its own space.
Judd’s furniture was differentiated from his artwork due to the belief that it must be functional and possess “reasonableness”. Judd believed that if furniture appeared only as art then it held a ridiculous quality, something Judd wanted to avoid. Judd’s creation of furniture began in 1970 and grew exponentially through the decade. "Corner Chair 15" represents a confluence of Judd’s artistic values and the functionality of furniture. The strict linear form of the piece focuses the viewer’s attention on the materiality of the piece. It commands us to consider its place within space and our potential engagement with its form.
