Born in Taiwan, James Jean (1979 - ) lives in Los Angeles producing films, sculptures, paintings, and drawings that vary in style and present a dream-like universe. Jean’s career began in illustration, designing several successful and acclaimed covers for DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Other renowned illustration works include the covers for "The Umbrella Academy", the album artwork for My Chemical Romance’s "Black Parade", a 2007 mural for Prada, and illustrations for Time Magazine. In 2008, after winning multiple prestigious illustration awards, Jean began focusing on painting. Jean’s work has been celebrated internationally, and in 2019, the Lotte Museum of Art in Seoul held a major retrospective called “Eternal Journey”. Jean often combines elements of historic Asian art with a contemporary twist, introducing digital and fantasy elements. This fuses a romantic past with a sharp contemporary perspective. It is the intertwining of juxtaposing elements that define Jean’s work.
“Dance" presents seemingly euphoric images of dancing flowers. The anthropomorphized flowers are reminiscent of designs from Disney’s Alice in Wonderland animation (1951). There are echoes of Murakami Takashi’s Superflat style in this piece. The style is often associated with contemporary fears of growing up in a hostile world and may explain Jean’s interpretation of a nostalgic film. Murakami has been a supporter of Jean for a long time.
