The Space Between
January 10th - 23rd, 2025
NEW presents a solo exhibition titled "The Space Between" by Steve Jansen, from 10th - 23rd January 2025. Known as the co-founding member of the band JAPAN, Steve Jansen is also active as a photographer, having captured numerous works over the years. This marks his third exhibition in Japan, following his debut at PARCO in 1981 and KYOTOGRAPHIE in 2018. Steve’s new work features photographic images taken during his visit to Tokyo in autumn 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with a sound installation for this exhibition, bringing the NEW space to life.
Drawing inspiration from the chaotic arrangement of buildings in central Tokyo, where irregular architectural structures gave rise to the theme of Resistentialism, the exhibition explores this playful theory. Resistentialism describes inanimate objects as conspiring against humans, creating the illusion that inorganic objects are malicious or hostile. Essentially, it acts as a mirror reflecting our behaviours and attitudes. Through this perspective, the artist invites viewers to observe and follow the trails of human activity within urban spaces.

Discarded litter is hidden out of sight, layers of stickers accumulating on constricted gateways, and pipes, cables, and wires peeking out from the shadows of buildings. These objects no longer seem to serve a functional purpose in the city, yet they still appear to be "waiting."
Some older apartment blocks open onto corridors with partially exterior entrances, overlooking the inaccessible side of adjacent structures left exposed to the elements, enabling decay and overgrowth to take hold. More debris is dropped out of view. Above the heads of city dwellers, crows peer down through the tangled mesh of overhead power lines, ready to scavenge for waste.
The shadows of the city seem to deepen and deepen as restaurants, bars, and shops come with their stimulating lights, sounds, and smells growing more intense. Constituting the urban soundscape—footsteps, metallic noises, and echoes resonating through the gaps between buildings and underground spaces—the sound installation weaves melodies and rhythms that cast shadows over the Tokyo landscape. If we existed in the inanimate dimension, we could observe humanity endlessly scurrying past, never pausing to notice.
Composed entirely of new works, the audio landscape and fragmented urban images stir the imagination, inviting viewers to stop and notice the space between structures in Tokyo. Capturing images and weaving a visual and sonic narrative of urban life from dead materials that have gained freedom by losing their given significance, the experience of seeing shadows from the space between generated -on the screen and through audio- emulates the nature of the reality in which so many of us live. NEW invites visitors to immerse themselves in this transitory experience, with artworks, audio postcards, and T-shirts available for purchase at the venue.
We are looking forward to seeing you.
