Artisanal Series

Presented in Maison Martin Margiela's Autumn-Winter 1998 Artisanal Series, this one-of-a-kind piece exemplifies the Maison's practice of reconstructing vintage garments into unique handcrafted works. Created by artisans using existing clothing and found materials, each Artisanal piece is singular by nature.
This work is reconstructed from a military shirt, distinguished by its sculptural neckline. Its flattened construction and conceptual treatment also reveal the influence of the Flat Garment Series introduced in the Spring-Summer 1998 collection, extending Margiela's exploration of the relationship between two-dimensional form and the body.
