Flat Garment Series

Presented in Maison Martin Margiela's Spring-Summer 1998 collection, the Flat Garment Series—also known as the Flat Collection—is one of the Maison's most iconic conceptual works. Conceived with the garment's flat, two-dimensional form as its finished state, the series transforms into an entirely new silhouette when worn, redefining the relationship between the body and clothing.
Each piece retains its original hanging hardware, which remains an integral part of the design and completes the work as both garment and object. The collection's presentation was equally groundbreaking: rather than models walking the runway, men dressed in white lab coats carried the garments on hangers, emphasizing the pieces as conceptual objects and bringing the language of the atelier directly onto the runway.
