Flat Garment Series

The Spring-Summer 1998 collection stands as one of Maison Martin Margiela's most experimental explorations of the structure and making of clothing. Expanding upon the investigations begun the previous season with exposed pattern pieces, Margiela pushed the concept further by proposing garments that existed first and foremost as two-dimensional objects. Rather than presenting models on a conventional runway, the collection was displayed by assistants dressed in white laboratory coats, who carried each piece on hangers through the audience, separating the garment from the body and presenting it as an autonomous
object.

This work belongs to the Flat Garments series, one of the defining concepts of the Spring-Summer 1998 collection. Conceived to exist in a flat state, the garment assumes its distinctive three-dimensional form only when worn. Functional elements intended for storage and display—including the hanging hardware and carrying handle—are deliberately retained as integral components of the design, collapsing the boundaries between presentation, preservation, and wear. By fundamentally reconsidering the structure of clothing and its relationship to the body, the Flat Garments series stands among Martin Margiela's most celebrated conceptual works.
