DESCRIPTION

Roberto Bernardi (b. 1974) is an Italian painter widely recognized for exploring the beauty hidden within everyday surroundings. He is known for depicting realistic subjects such as tableware, glasses, and kitchen appliances, as well as colourful and alluring confectionery subjects such as candy, thereby situating his practice within the contemporary context of hyperrealism. He began drawing at an early age and moved to Rome after graduating from high school in 1993, where he worked as a restorer at the Church of San Francesco a Ripa. He subsequently began his own painting practice, progressing through landscape and portraiture before transitioning to the realist style that characterises his current work. In 2004, Bernardi made a short visit to New York, where he forged connections with artists working within the tradition of American hyperrealism, including Richard Estes, Chuck Close, Tom Blackwell, and Charles Bell. The experiences of this period exerted a strong influence on Bernardi’s practice and led him toward his current style, which also resonates with Pop Art.

This work, LE MIE CARAMELLE, is an oil painting measuring 51 × 70 cm, created in 2008. Its title means “My Candies” in Italian. Painted four years after his stay in New York, the work depicts with photographic precision several varieties of colourful gum, candies, and liquorice contained in glass jars. The reflections on the table on which the subjects are placed and the transparency of the glass are exquisitely rendered, making this a quintessential Bernardi work. Bernardi’s practice has garnered high acclaim both domestically and internationally, and his works have been exhibited and collected by institutions including the Kunstmuseum Tübingen (Germany), the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza (Spain), the Stedelijk Museum (Netherlands), the Fort Wayne Museum of Art (USA), as well as at various international art fairs.
