Wolfgang Tillmans (b. 1968) is one of the most renowned contemporary photographers, having won the Turner Prize in 2000 and participated in solo and group exhibitions at leading museums worldwide, including Tate Britain, MoMA and the Centre Pompidou, as well as in Japan. His artistic practice reveals a consistent commitment to ‘visual democracy’, treating all subjects with equal value. This is evident in his work ranging from the snapshots of the club scene that established his reputation as a photographer in the 1990s, to his exploration of the relationships between everyday materials such as paper, fabric and light through visual observation. His representative works include his portrait series, ‘Paper Drop’ and ‘Truth Study Centre’.
This work 'Faltenwurf (Blue)', which means ‘folded fabric’ in German, is part of a series Tilmans has been exploring continuously since the 1990s and was produced in 2020. The work captures the appearance of two types of blue fabric, striped sky blue and indigo, overlapping in folds. Focusing intently on the details of the serendipitous beauty created by these two object, this piece is a quintessential style by Tillmans, in which one can sense the traces of his straightforward, practical approach. The work was unveiled in 2020 during the artist’s solo exhibitions held at WAKO WORKS OF ART in Tokyo and Galerie Buchholz in Berlin.
