The circle in the lower left containing a portrait photograph is a souvenir plate made by firing a photograph onto a dish, purchased by Jones himself at the shopping arcade of the Imperial Hotel during his stay in Japan in 1964.
In the painting, an actual plate, a flashlight, and a mirror to reflect its light are affixed to the surface, and this work follows suit with that approach.
