In 1960, Johns created the work that served as the basis for this print by pouring bronze into plaster molds and applying meticulous paintwork. The piece faithfully reproduces, down to the finest detail, a Savarin coffee can that was used as a brush holder in his studio, with numerous brushes standing upright inside it.
This series of prints hints at the influence of Edvard Munch's lithographic self-portraits. Considering that the brush—an indispensable tool for the painter—serves as the motif, it might also be interpreted as a self-portrait in Jasper Jones's own way.
