DESCRIPTION

Andy Warhol (1928-1987), a leading figure of 20th-century American Pop Art, revolutionised the boundary between art and commerce. Through the repeated silkscreening of familiar images such as Campbell’s soup cans, Coca-Cola bottles, and Marilyn Monroe, he vividly revealed the aesthetic of a consumer society. His works are currently on view at Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo in Omotesando.

Published in 1967, this piece belongs to the original portfolio personally supervised by Warhol during his Factory years, setting it apart from later reprints. The print itself embodies the cultural fervour of its time, making it profoundly emblematic. By endlessly reproducing the image of Marilyn Monroe—an icon of the 20th century who had just died in 1962—Warhol captured the very essence of modern art: the intertwining of death, desire, consumption, and media.
