The National Art Centre, Tokyo hosted a large-scale solo exhibition by the contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang (1957-) titled “Ramble in the Cosmos―From Primeval Fireball Onward”. Born in Quanzhou, China, Cai experienced the Cultural Revolution where there were intense protests with gun shots and explosions. Cai is known for creating innovative works through gunpowder and controlled explosions, most notably in Sky Ladder (2015), where Cai suspended a 500-meter ladder by a balloon and ignited it with gunpowder.
Cai moved to Japan in 1986 and lived there until 1995, during this time “gunpowder” became synonymous with his art production methodology. In 1991 at the P3 Art and Environment exhibition, Cai presented “Primeval Fireball: The Project for Projects”, which refers to the Big Bang, and in 1993 Cai carried out the ambitious Long Mai: The Dragon Meridian/ Project to Extend the Great Wall of China by 10,000 Meters: Project for Extraterrestrials No.10. This project saw Cai ignite a line of gunpowder that stretched 10,000 meters from the westernmost gateway of the Great Wall of Chine in Jiayuguan, extending the wall through flames and smoke.
