NAGAI Hiroshi (b. 1947) is one of Japan’s leading illustrators and painters. After beginning his career as a graphic designer, he studied under illustrator Teruhiko Yumura and became independent in 1973. That same year, he embarked on a 40-day trip across the United States with friends from Setsu Mode Seminar, visiting San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and New York. The experience became a major turning point, leading to the development of his signature style: vivid colors and striking contrasts evocative of the vast landscapes of the American West Coast. Among his most iconic works is the 1979 album cover design for Eiichi Ohtaki’s “A LONG VACATION”.
This work, created in 2000, is an acrylic painting measuring 41 × 32 cm. It depicts a serene vacation scene along a poolside beneath a brilliantly colored sky suggestive of the West Coast. From the 2000s onward, Nagai actively participated in art exhibitions, and this piece was produced during that period of transition, stands as a quintessential example of his enduring ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia.
