DESCRIPTION

Eric SNELL (1953-) is a British contemporary artist who explores the beauty of chance through material and process. Often incorporating natural phenomena into his works—such as drawings made with charred wood—he seeks to blur the boundaries between reality and abstraction. Viewing materials as catalysts, Snell visualises the trace of physical actions through his practice. In 1997, Snell was awarded the RSA Civic Trust Award for his Liberation Monument in Guernsey. Since then, he has continued to present exhibitions and projects across Europe, North America, and Japan, consistently crafting a world that playfully defies the viewer’s expectations.

This work, part of the Magnetic Drawing series, employs simple materials—magnets, thread, and nails—to render invisible forces like magnetism and gravity visible. The red thread, drawn taut by magnetic pull and tensioned across the wall, poetically expresses the fragile interplay between matter and energy. Snell’s interest lies in the chance-based relationships between materials and their environment, allowing viewers to experience intangible forces in spatial and visual form. Though minimal in appearance, the work opens up profound questions about perception and space.
