Naoyo Fukuda (1967-) completed her postgraduate studies in oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1992. She lived in Washington State, USA, from 1994 to 2000. Fukuda has exhibited her work at institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, and the Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art. Believing that "the world is made of words," Fukuda has long been interested in the relationship between words and letters. She creates sculptures, objects, and collages through meticulous and repetitive handwork on materials such as books, stationery, and letters. By repeating actions like carving, folding, cutting, and embroidering, she brings forth the effects of the unconscious and chance, encapsulating countless memories within the process.
The work titled Window was exhibited in 2016 during her solo exhibition "Water Pillow, Ice Pillow" at Yamakibi Library, a private library in Kanazawa. The grid of the manuscript paper leaves traces of words as empty spaces, casting light and shadow like a window. Fukuda's quiet explorations surrounding "words" are layered with time and resonate with the viewer's memory.
