Yoshitomo Nara, one of Japan's leading contemporary artists, is renowned for depicting children and animals with emotional complexity across various mediums, including painting, sculpture, and drawing. Among his many forms of expression, photography holds a unique place, as he has been taking photographs since his teenage years, long before deciding to pursue art. These photographs reveal his sensibilities, perspective, and the trajectory of his life.
The photo series taken between 2003 and 2012 captures various people, places, and his works, with each piece composed of two photographs placed side by side within a single frame. Many of these pair Nara's paintings or sculptures with everyday, universal subjects, offering glimpses into their connections and relationships. The innocent children and daily scenes depicted in the photographs evoke a sense of human delicacy and familiarity, with the warmth of humanity standing out more than the underlying emotional darkness or unsettling atmosphere often present in his paintings.
For Nara, photography serves as a means of introspection and dialogue within his creative process. It becomes evident that photography plays an essential role in his exploration of emotional depth and the complexity of human nature.
