Born in Wales, Cerith Wyn Evans (1958-) graduated from Central Saint Martins, University Arts London before becoming a conceptual artist and filmmaker. Evan’s artworks are informed by the practice of filmmaking, utilising extracts of texts from film, literature, or philosophy to formulate a philosophical dialogue between shared understanding and individual experience. For Evans, this creates a work of endless possibilities of interpretation grounded in the experience of the viewer. Encapsulating the constant process of renewal with each reading, Evan’s work possesses a transcendental quality as it elevates familiar words and objects into extraordinary experiences.
Evans was awarded the prestigious Hepworth Prize for sculpture in the UK in 2018 for a monumental work titled Composition for 37 Flutes that explored the complexity of sonic communication. Celebrated for producing ethereal neon sculptures, Evans produced More Light in the same year, which, like Composition for 37 Flutes, attempts to question the ephemeral elemental quality of light. By referencing ‘Light’ in the title, Evans is forcing the viewer to consider the materials that are producing the artwork and what “more light” would further illuminate, either physically or philosophically. Evans has stated “I love nothing more than neon in direct sunlight…” (Wallpaper Magazine, 2022), which is perhaps best encapsulated by this sculpture that combines a desire for light in any unspecified form, either natural sunlight or artificial neon. The ellipses in the writing continue to encourage intrigue from the viewer and encourage us to offer interpretation and share in collective questioning of the world around us.
