George Condo (1957 - ) initially studied art history and music theory at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. After graduating, Condo joined the punk band “The Girls” as a bassist. It was at a performance in New York that Condo met Jean-Michel Basquiat in 1979. Basquiat suggested that Condo move to New York to focus on an arts career. During the 1980s, Condo worked in Andy Warhol’s “Factory”, adding diamond dust to screenprints, as well as exhibiting independently in various exhibitions. This early work was defined by Condo’s philosophy of “Artificial Realism”, where artificial objects were given realistic representation in painting. These combined the traditions of Old Master painting with the sensibilities of American Pop Art. Condo blends these genres together to form irreverent and unique portraits. These paintings are inspired by Condo’s background in art history and recall other disruptive portrait artists like Pablo Picasso and Willem de Kooning. Condo’s juxtaposition of irregular objects and shapes presents a surrealist take on the human body. In 2010, Condo was commissioned by Kanye West to design the album artwork for "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy". Condo’s works have been highly desired and collected by many significant institutions, including the MoMA in New York.
