DESCRIPTION

Wolfgang Tillmans (1968 -) is one of the most celebrated living photographers, having won the Turner Prize in 2000. Tillmans is known for capturing intimate moments, often taking photographs of friends in casual surroundings. The documentarian style of Tillmans' early work captured a youthful longing for freedom that defined much of the 1990s style. The success of this photography style evolved into commercial photography for magazines. Tillmans began to curate exhibitions of photography that challenged established gallery hierarchies, presenting unframed images alongside supersized photographs and magazine clippings.
In 2001, Tillmans began the "Paper Drop" series as a way to investigate the relationship between photography and the material that structures it. This creates a dynamic relationship between the image and the base of the photograph. The series often depicts paper folded back on itself to form an elliptical shape reminiscent of a teardrop. As Tillmans’ work concentrates extensively on photography, this series can be seen as an introspective examination of the artist and how photography defines the cultural perception of Wolfgang Tillmans. The "Oranienplatz" in the title of this piece refers to a street in Berlin, a place that has also become associated with Tillmans. Tillmans has commented that this series aims to convey the multiplicity of experience, with the photograph of a photograph; Tillmans’ lens showing us what the artist sees.
