The eminent German artist Gerhard Richter (1932 - ) has had an unprecedented impact on contemporary art and the art market. Richter’s diverse styles have opened up conceptual and creative developments continuously since the 1960s. Based in Cologne, Richter's work has been extensively exhibited internationally. Central to Richter’s practice is the photograph, with early works questioning the structural integrity of the image. Richter would blur images to create new compositions that were spontaneous and energetic. Richter eventually wanted to contrast photography’s quality of ubiquitous reproduction with the unique materiality of applied paint. For Richter, photography depicts, but does not possess, reality, whilst painting is constructed by brushstrokes that hold the truth and reality of the moment of application. The paint on the photographs imbues energy and life into each photograph, which are otherwise barren structuralist catalogues of moments.
The Kassel series was created for the ninth edition of the Documenta quinquennial exhibition. The Documenta IX exhibition was held in Kassel, Germany, and this image sees Richter paint on top of a photograph depicting the Kassel skyline. This work has been exhibited in numerous international exhibitions.
