Born in Osaka, Shiota Chiharu (1972 - ) is currently based in Berlin, and is one of the leading Japanese contemporary artists. From exhibiting in 2018 at the Art Gallery of South Australia to a solo show at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo in 2019, Shiota has been exhibiting internationally. Significantly, in 2015, Shiota was chosen as a representative of the Japan Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale. Shiota is known for immersive spatial drawings using threads and various objects such as boats that explore universal and essential questions of life and death; representative works of this style were shown in the "Uncertain Journey" series presented at the Mori Art Museum in 2016 and 2019. After having a nightmare about drowning in oil paint, Shiota shifted away from painting for a short time and focused on three-dimensional works. After that, Shiota returned to the canvas, but began using thread instead to create works.
Created in 2019, this work, “Skin”, consists of a 30 x 30 cm canvas with thread. The title of the work amusingly refers to the delicate intertwining and overlapping of red threads across the surface of the canvas to create an organic aspect that resembles the blood vessels of the skin on our bodies. It is thought that the red thread represents the fate of existence, and through the mass of thread sewn onto the canvas, Shiota’s “Skin” encapsulates the invisible connections that exist in this world.
