DESCRIPTION

Born in Osaka, Matsutani Takesada (1937 - ) wanted to be a Japanese-style painter in the early part of his artistic career. In the 1960s, after studying under Yoshihara Jiro, the founder of the Gutai Art Association movement, Matsutani had profound exchanges with artists and writers who were driving the avant-garde art movement in postwar Japan. Around 1962, Matsutani began to create works using vinyl adhesive, the medium that has become synonymous with the artist. In 1966, Matsutani received a scholarship from the French government to study abroad in France. From around 1980, after working in printmaking, Matsutani started to create works where pencil lines were imposed onto the surface of reliefs that were created by bonding graphite to the canvas. These works received international acclaim. For a month in 1980, from September 13th to October 19th, Matsutani held a solo exhibition at Gallery S65 in Belgium.
This work "Untitled", which measures 92 x 73 cm, was produced in 1979. Here, a black code that penetrates the surface and wraps around a gourd-like shape is fixed to the reverse of the canvas. This piece was reproduced on the invitation of the solo exhibition and is one of Matsutani’s masterpieces.
