Stockman Series

The Spring-Summer 1997 collection marked one of Martin Margiela's most incisive explorations of the creative process itself as a form of design. Pattern pieces, toiles, linings, and other elements traditionally concealed within a finished garment were deliberately brought to the surface, transforming the act of making into the work itself. Rather than celebrating polished perfection, the collection revealed the underlying structure and construction of clothing, articulating Margiela's enduring belief that the process of creation is as significant as the finished object.
Among the defining works of the collection is the Stockman Jacket, one of Maison Martin Margiela's most celebrated designs.

Reimagining the torso of a Stockman dress form—the iconic mannequin long used in Parisian couture ateliers—as a wearable jacket, Margiela transformed one of fashion's essential tools into the garment itself. In doing so, he challenged conventional notions of clothing, questioning the relationship between body and garment, utility and object. Widely regarded as one of the House's most iconic creations, the Stockman Jacket is represented in the collections of major museums around the world.
