Doll (Barbie), Replica Series
The Spring-Summer 1999 collection can be seen as a culmination of Maison Martin Margiela's first decade, revisiting and reinterpreting many of the House's defining ideas and motifs. Rather than simply reproducing earlier works, Margiela developed and reconstructed their underlying concepts, presenting them from a new perspective. Marking nearly ten years since the Maison's founding, the collection reflected on its creative evolution while reaffirming the enduring relevance of its philosophy for the future.
This work revisits the celebrated Doll (Barbie) collection first introduced in Autumn-Winter 1994. Based on the concept of enlarging garments originally made for dolls to human scale, the design faithfully translates characteristic details—most notably its oversized buttons—into wearable proportions. By merging the world of childhood play with the traditions of haute couture, Margiela challenged conventional ideas of scale, perception, and the relationship between clothing and the body. The piece remains one of the House's most iconic and enduring designs.
