Jones began working on pieces featuring the numbers 0 through 9 in his earliest printmaking years, starting in 1960. Numbers appear repeatedly in both his paintings and prints. Regarding the repetition of a single motif, he stated in an interview with Christian Heyhar: "The scope of what a person can achieve is limited by their interest, imagination, and passion. ...But without worrying about such limits, I want to repeat a single image in different media and observe the interaction between the two—the image and the medium."
During production, the same stone used in the preceding “Black Numeral Series” was employed, with aluminum plates added to incorporate white.
The background color of the “Color Numeral Series” corresponds to one of the three colors from the continuous spectrum, specifically one of the seven colors of the rainbow proposed by Newton (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). The number seven is positioned so that the final violet and the initial red are adjacent, creating the illusion that the colors have come full circle. The Mona Lisa is depicted because Jones held deep admiration for both Leonardo da Vinci and Marcel Duchamp.
