Richard Francis notes that in his earliest works, “his emotional reactions were too overtly visible, and after his debut, he sought to conceal such elements. He began looking around his surroundings in search of established subjects.”
It was within this context that numbers were chosen. For Jones, who rejected narrative, numbers—unadorned yet endowed with infinite design potential—likely represented the ideal motif for someone pursuing the very essence of expressive form.
