This work was created by Jasper Johns — who had long shown an interest in Japanese culture — using the Edo-period kabuki play "Shin Usuyuki Monogatari" as its underlying inspiration. The delicate use of color calls the title to mind. Among the crosshatching works that Johns began to employ with increasing frequency from a certain period onward, this piece stands as one of the most complex. Produced using both silkscreen and lithograph techniques, the work is a testament to Johns's enduring spirit of inquiry into the possibilities of artistic expression.
