This work was created by Jasper Johns — who had long shown an interest in Japanese culture — using the Edo-period kabuki play "Shin Usuyuki Monogatari" as its underlying inspiration. Among the crosshatching works that Johns began to employ with increasing frequency from a certain period onward, this piece stands as one of the most complex. Produced using both silkscreen and lithograph techniques, the work is a testament to Johns's enduring spirit of inquiry into the possibilities of artistic expression.
