In 1964, Johns employed the motif of a skull and the technique of screen printing for the first time. He learned the screen printing method from Andy Warhol, and this work was produced using that same technique. While the skull appears in numerous works by Johns, a single skull presented alone is relatively rare. The work carries an expressive quality that resonates with contemporary street art.
