DESCRIPTION

Publisher: Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles

Expressing an ironic attitude toward critics, this work, which incorporates objects into a flat surface, hints at the influence Johns would have not only on Pop Art but also on the Minimal Art and Conceptual Art movements that would emerge in the following generation. Johns has said that by transforming a three-dimensional object into a relief, he sought to express a different kind of three-dimensionality. The work was produced at the Gemini workshop through an elaborate process: aluminum molds were made from wax or plaster templates, several trial prints were pulled, pure lead was compressed to cast the objects, and finally a tinfoil toothbrush handle was attached.
