The light bulb first appeared in Johns's work as a three-dimensional piece in 1958, and went on to feature in his work time and again thereafter. In 2008, an exhibition dedicated exclusively to Johns's light bulb works toured San Diego and Seattle — a testament to the fact that the light bulb stands alongside "flags" and "targets" as one of his most iconic motifs. Created at a time when the very act of incorporating everyday objects into the world of art was met with surprise, these works were revolutionary in that they prompted viewers to grapple with a question that people of previous generations had never thought to ask: "What exactly is art?"
