In creating his prints, Jones pursued not only variations in technique but also the effects of color. This work was originally produced as a black-and-white lithograph at the Gemini studio in 1979, then reworked and published as a color-enhanced etching at the Petersburg studio. The hand arranged to fit precisely within the semicircle evokes the image of a compass, lending a sense of movement to the picture plane.
