The greatness of Jasper Johns may be somewhat difficult for us today to fully appreciate. Yet it is worth remembering that before his time, the subjects he chose were not considered appropriate themes for art. By placing them side by side, or by layering them over one another, he brought out a different character in each, connecting them to art in the way seen in works such as this one. His use of the three primary colors may well be the result of a deliberate refusal to assign any specific meaning through color.
