The original source for this work is considered to be a painting with an attached canvas from the 1960s titled "Portrait — Viola Farber," though it can also be seen as part of a broader lineage that includes works such as "Canvas" (1956), in which a smaller canvas was affixed face-down onto a larger one. Since attaching an actual canvas face-down is not possible in a print, part of the canvas is shown as having fallen away, revealing the blank space beneath.
