Johns has said that the image of a flashlight came to him in his mind as something contemplative, carefully considered, and universal in everyday life. This work is from a portfolio themed around sculptural works he produced between 1958 and 1960. In approaching the task of translating these works into prints, he began with the flashlight as his earliest three-dimensional pieces.
