This print was based on the sculptural work "Painted Bronze," first exhibited in 1960. The story behind his choice to depict Ballantine beer cans as the subject of the work traces back to an anecdote involving the painter Willem de Kooning, who had reportedly said to art dealer Leo Castelli: "I bet he could sell anything, even two beer cans."
