In post-war Japan, the exploration of calligraphy as an art form expanded significantly under the strong influence of Western art movements. Yuichi Inoue was one of the leading avant-garde calligraphers who actively developed experimental works within this evolving context. He studied calligraphy under Sokyu Ueda for eight years, beginning in 1941. Inoue gained initial recognition with his notable work Jiga-cha（自我偈） in 1950, which marked the beginning of his prominence as an emerging calligrapher. Among his best-known works are Gu Tsu（愚徹）, which was exhibited at the São Paulo Biennial in 1957, and Hin（貧）, which encapsulated Inoue’s philosophy and way of life. His oeuvre extended beyond single-character kanji, as he deeply explored artistic expression through word series and multi-character kanji compositions.
In the 1960s, Inoue pushed the boundaries of material experimentation by incorporating adhesives into ink and manipulating ink under frozen conditions. Notable works from this period include Kou (好), Haha (母), and Kaze (風). The work Fuchi (淵), a single-character kanji, exemplifies his artistic exploration during this transitional phase. This piece reflects Inoue’s deep investigation into the aesthetic possibilities of calligraphy. As he wrote in his book Liberation of Calligraphy: ‘There is no other art form in this world as simple, straightforward, and profound as calligraphy, one that can seamlessly integrate into our daily lives.’
