Chicago-based American artist William J O'Brien (1975 - ) works across different mediums, from ceramics, painting, drawing, and sculpture to installation. Drawing and ceramics are most rooted in his practice, and O'Brien works across the different body of works as if conversing within himself. Underlying the improvisational and abstract elements of his work are strong influences from various cultural aspects such as art history, ethnic history, traditional crafts, pop culture, and queer identities.
This work, “Untitled,” was created in 2007 and comprised of a mixture of diverse geometric patterns of yellow and grey spreading throughout the paper. This iconic work is typical of his style often seen in the drawing work, which is based on the repetition of simple shapes drawn with improvisation, and can be seen as a natural development of his practice that is derived from his strong interest in science and geometry in his early childhood. This work proceeded in the early stages of his artistic career, and it reveals his creative passion which is consistent in his practice to the present.
