Born in Chicago, Ruth Root (1967-) is an American abstract painter. After completing an MFA at the Art Institute of Chicago, Root has gone on to become a leading figure in American Abstraction and non-objective painting. Known for interrogating the materiality of painting as well as form, Root regularly paints in oil on large scale aluminum bases. The shape of the colored geometric painted forms often mimic or juxtapose with the irregularity of the aluminum sheets that Root utilizes. This creates a composition filled with playful nuances between the shapes contained in the image.
The ultra-thin aluminum sheets that act as a base for the paintings allow Root to create forms that are almost structurally impossible within traditional media of paper, canvas, or wood supports.
The sheets are able to be hung flush with the wall, allowing the paintings to act as a structural intervention in the space that they are exhibited in. These paintings have been described as flattened sculpture due to the complex interplay between the image, its support, and the display. These paintings fit into the wider global interrogation of cultural and social flatness. Untitled is characteristic of Root's style, employing layered bold colors on aluminum that almost resemble a cityscape or a digital glitch.
