Shiota Chiharu (b. 1972), a Japanese contemporary artist based in Berlin, is known for her performances and installations that express intangible concepts such as memory, anxiety, dreams, and silence. Although her works often originate from personal experiences, they address universal themes such as identity, boundaries, and existence, captivating a broad audience worldwide. In 2015, she was selected to represent Japan at the 56th Venice Biennale, and in 2019, she held a large-scale solo exhibition at the Mori Art Museum.
In the series "Trauma / Alltag," where baby shoes serve as a key symbol, Shiota explores how trauma hidden within individuals influences their daily lives. The baby shoes entangled in black threads, symbolize childhood memories and innocence, suggesting how trauma can impact life from its earliest stages. While the shoes represent everyday life, the threads visualize the inner anxieties and conflicts, illustrating the deep connection between trauma and the mundane. This work invites viewers to reflect on unconscious wounds and how they shape daily life.
