Graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2012, Nakazono Koji (1989-2015) was soon discovered by the Tomio Koyama Gallery, marking an impressive debut as an artist. A painter with a promising future, he disappeared after a drowning accident at the age of 25 and was never seen again. The recent exhibition Koji Nakazono: Soulmate at the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art in 2023 reminded us of his brilliance. This exhibition was the largest ever of Nakazono's work, showcasing over 600 pieces created during his short eight-year career. Ten years after his death, there is still significant attention on his work and mysterious life. Nakazono's style is considered to lack a clear, established pattern, which can be attributed to his application of diverse techniques. He described the painting as "creating an outer edge and drawing a landscape inside," giving viewers the impression of a scene emerging from a mosaic-like flood of images.
This work, measuring 53 x 33 cm, is an oil painting of unknown date of production. Blurred background colors, including green, fill the entire work. Looking closely, multiple ghost-like faces are depicted nested within each other. Green, often used to suggest neutrality, frequently appears in Nakazono's works. Despite its small size, this piece is a typical example of Nakazono's habitual artistic elements.
